Finding the best Christmas gifts for an elderly bedbound relative can be difficult. No-one wants to be bedridden, but mobility and frailty can often mean that they are restricted to their bed.
We often are under the illusion that their life is severely restricted so finding the best Christmas gifts for an elderly bedbound relative is impossible. Not so. After you have finished reading this blog post you will have tonnes of ideas to find that perfect gift that will bring a smile to their face.
Laying in bed for long periods can become very uncomfortable. Finding a comfortable sitting position so that they can do more such as read or watch TV can be difficult. Thinking about a gift that can make them more comfortable would be a practical and thoughtful gift.
Christmas Gift Ideas for Bedbound
A useful gift such as a sitting pillow can help to keep them upright and comfortable. Sitting support can help keep them mentally and physically engaged by being able to ‘do more’. Being able to sit and read, doing a wordsearch and watching TV can be beneficial to be able to spend their time enjoying activities in a more comfortable position.
A good book and wordsearch and activity books can make a lovely gift to keeping their mind active and spending their time engaging in something worthwhile.
A personalised jigsaw puzzle can be a thoughtful gift. A jigsaw can be stimulating and mentally challenging. If they have dementia there are also some great dementia type jigsaw puzzles out there.
To help keep them cosy in bed and give their space the personal touch a personalised blanket can make a well received gift. Personalised with their favourite family photos and memories will surely bring a smile to their face and brighten their day.
A bed table to be able to sit in bed and do their jigsaw or activity books can be a very useful addition and are adjustable to fit most beds and space. Prices vary widely but you can buy a good table at a reasonable price. If a bed lap tray table is preferred then these are very good and worth looking at. These fold away and save a lot of space.
Some nice toiletries are always a popular choice for a gift. Nice gift sets for a bit of self pampering are a lovely idea. This hand cream gift set is perfect.
Anyone who is bedbound still likes to look and feel nice. Being immobile however can create difficulty in being able to do things that we all take for granted. Showering and washing our hair can make us feel nice. Finding solutions for these in form of a gift would be warmly welcomed.
Shower caps with no rinse ability are great for keeping hair clean when immobile. If a proper hair wash is preferred, an inflatable wash basin is perfect for this. They will still be able to use their favourite shampoo.
Some bed wear to complete the pamper feel such as a nice nightdress or pyjamas would be a great idea. It is however worth considering more practical designs for bed washes.
A night fleece bed jacket that is front buttoned is a nice gift and cosy too. These are easily removed. Front buttoned night wear is useful in being able to remove more easily to bathe in bed. This nightwear is ideal for men and is the same. The easier to remove the better.
There are many activities that someone can do if stuck indoors. Read my other post on indoor activities for more inspiration and ideas. Finding what they are interested in is key.
